Colors Trends: Earthy Tones and Muted Hues

September is a month of balance, where the bright, energetic colors of summer give way to more muted, earthy tones that herald the cooler months. Trending colors this fall include:

  • Burnt Orange | Rusty Red - reflecting the changing leaves, these colors add warmth and depth to interiors

  • Olive Green - natural greens remain popular, adding a calming and grounded feel to spaces

  • Warm Neutrals - beige, taupe and warm browns are the perfect backdrop to cozy interiors

  • Buttery Yellow - this muted shade because it almost looks like an oversaturated beige and its hue evokes images of changing leaves and saffron lattes

One of my favorite way to incorporate more bold colors is through pops of accents that are easy to change as the season changes. Think botanical elements, accent pillows, throw blankets, rugs, lamps, bowls and vases, etc.

Texture Play: Layering for Comfort

As the temperatures drop, there’s a renewed focus on comfort through texture. September design leads into layers that evoke a sense of warmth.

  • Knits, Soft Linens and Woven Textures - throws, cushions and baskets create a tactile, yet cozy and inviting experience

  • Velvet - luxurious and plush, velvet is a staple for the cooler months, weather in upholstery or accent decor

  • Natural Materials - wood, stone and rattan maintain their popularity, adding organic warmth and texture to living spaces

Bringing a variety of textures is a wonderful way to add layers, which add warmth and depth to your home - e.g., balancing smooth, polished surfaces like marble with softer, more organic textiles, like a wooden bowl, creates a balance of sleek and cozy perfect for the season ahead.

Organic Shapes: Soft Curves and Natural Forms

As we transition into fall, there’s a growing emphasis on organic shapes in design.

  • Curved Lines - soft, flowing lines creates a more relaxed and approachable aesthetic - e.g., curved furniture, arches, etc.

  • Asymmetry and Imperfection - imperfect items to create a more lived-in look, such as irregular mirrors, abstract art, flower arrangements

  • Brining Nature Indoors - from large statement plants or accent botanicals to landscape paintings

Inspired by the imperfect, flowing forms found in nature, organic shapes add a sense of fluidity and comfort, making spaces feel more inviting and dynamic.

Layered Lighting: Creating Warmth and Depth

As the days get shorter, lighting becomes an even more important design element in the fall. By combining multiple light sources , you create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Consider layering different types of lighting in addition to chandeliers and pendants, such as table lamps, floor lamps, and sconces.
